Practice of Presence

Practice of Presence

Jason Myers is a contemporary American artist whose work explores human presence through a dynamic engagement with material, structure, and space. Working across sculpture, painting, printmaking, and digital media, Myers creates open, relational environments where form emerges through process and perception. His practice centers on the tension between fragility and endurance, often returning to the upright figure as a site where human awareness meets space.

Myers received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute and his Master of Fine Arts from American University. Drawing on a broad technical foundation across both traditional and contemporary media, his work integrates industrial materials, layered surfaces, and digital processes into structures that are experienced rather than depicted.

Central to his practice is an intuitive process in which forms evolve through direct engagement with material and spatial conditions. Figures and structures often appear scaffolded or unresolved, inviting the viewer into an active perceptual role. In this way, Myers’ work shifts from representation toward encounter—foregrounding awareness, presence, and the relationship between body and space.

Maintaining studios in Indiana and the Netherlands, Myers works outside large-scale production models, engaging directly with materials over extended periods of development. His studio-based approach emphasizes structure, openness, and the experiential relationship between artwork and viewer.

Myers’ work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and internationally.

His solo museum exhibition STATUS: fluid/dynamic debuted at the Polk Museum of Florida and traveled to the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. He has completed large-scale commissions, including a 60-foot installation for the Lowlands Music Festival in the Netherlands. His work is included in museum collections such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art and has been exhibited at institutions including the Mint Museum, Museum de Fundatie, and the Cornell Museum.

Recent projects continue Myers’ investigation into presence within technological systems. His exhibition I AM ALGORITHM presents one hundred self-portraits alongside a sculptural figure, examining the evolving relationship between human identity and digital networks.
